History

What? Madame Labriski has added insect powder to a recipe AGAIN! Yuk! Count me out.

Sorry, let me stop you right there.

This high-protein recipe with no added sugar is not only super easy to make, it’s also deliciously decadent and tastes just like Reese’s chocolate. Which means you can satisfy your sweet tooth while increasing your protein intake. That’s got to be win-win, right?

What’s more, I’ve used mealworm powder again because it smells like roasted hazelnuts and just one serving of two tablespoons contains 8 g of protein. (See my other recipe for Mind-BUGGling energy balls!) It just goes to show how easy it is to add protein while indulging in delicious treats.

Did you know?

When you opt for insect protein, you’re making an eco-friendly choice.

In fact, I know I’m repeating myself but mealworm protein (made in the province of Quebec) contains more protein than beef, more iron than spinach, more calcium than milk and amino acids for the day. It has to be said, it’s powerful stuff.

I wrote a short and unassuming article about my experience. I can understand if you don’t like the idea of consuming insect powder. In Quebec, we’re just not used to it. But I wanted you to know that it’s a healthy food choice for both you and the planet.

If you don’t have any insect protein powder, you can easily make this recipe using milk powder… You have Madame Labriski’s word on that!

Bon appétit!

*Note: People who are allergic to shellfish may also be allergic to edible insects, including mealworms.

FAQ

Where can I buy Madame Labriski date puree?

At IGA, Rachelle Béry, Marché Tradition and Bonichoix grocery stores across Quebec. My purees contain no preservatives and can be found in the fruit and vegetable section (yes, dates are fruit) near the pre-cut fruit and vegetables. If you can’t find them, simply ask a member of staff!

How do you make date puree?

Buy date halves that are perfect for cooking and make your own date puree. Get the recipe here.

I have cricket powder. Can I add some to any recipe?

Yes. You can easily add 2 to 3 tablespoons. Cricket powder is a flour (powder) that’s very high in protein.
