Ingredients

  • 150 g (1/2 cup) Madame Labriski date puree

  • 150 g (1/2 cup) plain fat-free yogurt

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tbsp. vanilla extract

  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda

  • 1 tsp. baking powder

  • Pinch of salt

  • 3 oranges (for the zest)

  • 180 g (1 1/2 cups) whole-wheat flour

  • 15 g (1/8 cup) ground flax seeds

  • 2 tbsp. poppy seeds (or more if you feel like it)

  • 150 g (3/4 cup) dark chocolate chips

13 steps

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).

  • Put the date puree, plain fat-free yogurt, egg and vanilla into a bowl and mix.

  • Add the baking soda, baking powder and salt.

  • Check out the bubbling effect (don’t laugh! It fascinates me every time) and mix again.

  • Zest the oranges and put the fruit of your labour into the bowl.

  • Put your three zested oranges in a bag and eat them within the next few days…

  • Now, back to our bowl. Add the whole-wheat flour, flax seeds and poppy seeds and mix together..

  • To taste: add the dark chocolate chips and stir again.

  • DON’T FORGET! You’ll need to line your cookie sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper, or you can simply grease it. If you don’t, everything will stick because there’s absolutely no added fat in this recipe.

  • Spoon drop the dough (I use teaspoons) onto the cookie sheet about one inch apart. If you’re feeling inspired, you can even garnish with a little twist of orange zest in the centre of each cookie.

  • Bake for 15 minutes.

  • Allow to cool on the cookie sheet or a cooling rack.

  • Savour, bask in the comforting feeling and… smile.

History

This is the very first recipe I posted on the French version of my blog and ever since people have been sending me photos of themselves in Florida holding one of these cookies. Hahaha! It’s crazy and it’s funny and just thinking about it, I can almost smell the tangy sweet aroma of Florida oranges combined with the rich taste of dark chocolate. Yum-yummski!

This is an honest to goodness, feel-good recipe. And it’s got to be heaps more fun eating a Florida After Dark energy cookie than just an ordinary orange and dark chocolate one, right? Hahahaha! I certainly think so. Here’s to health and happiness!
