History

Ever tried my famous ChocoGo protein cookies? Recognized for their ideal carbohydrate and protein ratio for faster recovery after exercise, people have been asking me for ages to come up with an “energy ball” version. One fine spring afternoon in between two meetings about the development of a new product WITH NO ADDED REFINED SUGAR, I came up with the idea for these balls:

They’re a cross between the ChocoGo energy cookies and the ever-popular With a Grain of Salt cookies.

You’re kidding! It sounds too good to be true.

It IS true, I’m telling you.

My hubby is totally nuts about the taste. High in protein because they’re made with powdered milk (you add it to the recipe in powdered form), I bet these SaltyWowChoGo energy balls will make you go

“wowowowowowow!”  Hahaha! Here’s a very easy and uncomplicated recipe that will give you the boost you need after a workout… or simply when you’re feeling hungry.

Why did I come up with such a strange and hard to pronounce name for my SaltyWowChoGo balls? Because when I was a kid, I always loved tongue-twisters. You know, like “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers; A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?” And when I said the name of this recipe out loud, I got my tongue in a bit of a twist! Can you say it five times really quickly? After all, we’re never too old for some fun and games and they keep us young at heart.

P.S.: If you don’t have any caramel extract, you can easily make these balls with my caramel date puree with no added sugar. Otherwise, simply use vanilla extract.

It’s always simple and easy with Madame Labriski.

FAQ

Where can I buy Madame Labriski date puree?

At IGA, Rachelle Béry, Marché Tradition and Bonichoix grocery stores across Quebec. My purees contain no preservatives and can be found in the fruit and vegetable section (yes, dates are fruit) near the pre-cut fruit and vegetables. If you can’t find them, simply ask a member of staff!

How do you make date puree?

Buy date halves that are perfect for cooking and make your own date puree. Get the recipe here.

What can I use as a substitute for milk powder?

It depends on the recipe. When I use milk powder, it’s often a central ingredient in the recipe. Leaving it out is a bit like taking away its very essence. I use it to add protein and give it a nice smooth creamy texture. Without the milk powder, you need to adjust the entire recipe. You can use soy milk powder and you’ll get good results but the texture won’t be the same. It may therefore be best to just try another recipe.
